The shipping services sector pays little attention to the scale of port handling rates set by the Indian Tariff authority, and the port of Kochi has recently increased handling rates tot he detriment of seafood exporters. Handling rates compare unfavourable to neighbouring countries. Shipping lines from Indian coasts have also increased freight rates for refrigerated cargo without warning. Many exporters are now trans shipping through foreign ports to avoid the hight freight rates on direct sailings from Indian ports.
