A huge illicit trade in imports of garlic from China to the EU countries has been growing up since 2001. The EU imposed a 9.6% duty on garlic imports to try and stop Europe’s garlic towers being driven out of business by farmers in China who have captured much of the global market in recent years. Garlic smugglers have recently been arrested in Sweden.
