British children should grow up knowing the taste of Melton Mowbray pork pies, Norfolk turkeys and black pudding, Liz Truss, the Environment Secretary, has said.

She said that the UK imports of large quantities of apples, pears and cheese at a time when “we have never had it so good” for British food and drink were a ‘disgrace.’ She said she will be “bigging up” British produce in Paris at the world’s largest food fair next month.

In her final message to delegates at the Conservative Party conference, Ms Truss claimed she “will not rest until the British apple is at the top of the tree”. Ms Truss said almost 600 new markets had been opened overseas, adding exports had increased by more than £1 billion in the last four years.
