Freight theft is on the increase, and looks set to grow during the recession as if offers criminals a high reward for their efforts. The UK Police has therefore been working with a supplier of vehicle tracking systems to develop a lorry fitted with a tracking system which allows police to constantly monitor the trailer. It includes hidden cameras with night vision, and the Association of Chief Police Officers said that the video footage from these cameras was admissable in court as supporting evidence. It is hoped that the ‘sting trailers’ will help police to find and prosecute the perpetrators of freight crime, which is a costly problem.
