According to the World Shipping Council, ocean shipping is the most efficient way to carry freight.  Recent estimates show that it can be 17 times more efficient than airfreight, and 10 times more efficient than transporting by road.  In addition, the high price of fuel means that ships minimise fuel consumption, and in the process minimise emissions. The Council argues that further regulation and taxes will raise costs and increase inflation – it will not result in fewer greenhouse emissions.
