Ferry operators have benefited to such a great extent from the fire in the Channel tunnel, that Dover had its second busiest freight day ever on 16 September. Although operators will undoubtedly go back to the Tunnel when it is fully operational, they will probably consider using a mixture of ferry and tunnel rather than dedicating all their freight to one mode. The tunnel is more vulnerable than sea transport, as one incident had a drastic effect on the capacity. At sea, there is always an alternative vessel or port available if something goes wrong.
