Many of the world’s largest shipping lines are avoiding the main ports in Tokyo Bay because of fear over high levels of radiation leaking from Fukushima. Container shipping lines avoided the ports of Yokohama and Tokyo, and a spokesman for the freight shipping industry said that container shipments to Eastern Japan could cease completely if carriers decided that Tokyo was unsafe. Tokyo and Yokohama handle approximately 40% of the country’s overseas freight cargo. At the weekend only 30% of the country’s 208 shipping berths were reported open.
