The moon’s close proximity to the earth this weekend seems to have caused a cargo ship to go aground in the narrow shipping lance between the Isle of Wight and the Hampshire coast.  the moon was 31 000 miles closer to the earth than usual on Saturday night, causing an extra large tidal range.  The sandbanks at the side of the shipping lane are not normally exposed, but are thought to be a factor in the cargo vessel grounding.  The crew had to pump out water from the ballast tanks to make the vessel lighter and wait until high tide.  No one was hurt.
