Global shipping giant Maersk has announced plans to expand its logistics footprint in Vietnam through a strategic partnership with local firm Hateco, targeting the development of a rail freight depot network in Haiphong.
According to a statement issued by the carrier, the proposed investment in the Haiphong rail depot, combined with existing joint port ventures alongside Hateco, could reach a total value of up to $3.5 billion.
The move underscores Maersk’s commitment to strengthening multimodal logistics capabilities across Southeast Asia, with Vietnam emerging as a key hub for global trade and manufacturing. The planned rail depot network is expected to enhance inland connectivity, streamline cargo movement, and support the growing demand for efficient supply chain solutions in the region.
For businesses relying on international freight forwarding, developments such as this signal continued investment in infrastructure that will improve transit times, reduce bottlenecks, and offer more robust logistics options between Asia and global markets.
