Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs is phasing in a new Customs Declaration Service (CDS).   This is new technology, which replaces the existing Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system.

The new system is already being used by a small group of businesses, and more will be added over the coming months.  HMRC will contact companies to let them know when they are required to start using CDS, so don’t worry;  if you haven’t been contacted yet then it is not your turn.

For imports, businesses are expected to move over to CDS early in 2019.  Export clearance should be available in March 2019.

HMRC says that the introduction of CDS should not impact the movement of imports or exports.
