The raised price level for pangasius, a freshwater fish which has become popular in the USA, is boosting Vietnam’s chances of reaching, or even surpassing, its $9 billion exports target.
Pangasius exports are likely to exceed $2bn for the first time this year. According to the chairman of the Vietnam Pangasius Association, eight Mekong Delta provinces have to date farmed 814,086 metric tons of pangasius this year.
In January-July, pangasius exports brought in nearly $1.2bn, an increase of about 20% year-on-year.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers noted that Vietnam therefore xported $200 million worth of pangasius as a monthly average.
