There is great demand for red meat from the West country from abroad. Exports to Italy and France are particularly encouraging. West country lamb and beef have gained European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status that will help to boost demand and export volumes.
Farmhouse cheese makers are making significant inroads into the export market. One West country producer has increased production by 1,000 tonnes a year. Pork producers who have seen new markets open up in Asia.
