The North East of England exported goods and services worth about £327 million in 2012 to China.  The biggest volumes were in machinery, transport equipment and chemicals.  Local manufacturers say that there is potential to increase the exports, even though manufacturing in China is cheaper.  It is a £1bn market with a growing middle class, which values European brands – although the imports may cost more than the domestically made product.
