In the wake of the horse meat scandal last year, British retailers turned to domestic supplies of beef, but now they are buying imports from Poland at a cheaper price.
While imported beef doesn’t fit the Red Tractor requirements to signify British origin – or the newly bestowed West Country Beef PGI indicator – cheaper imports suit manufacturers and the catering industry.
Supermarkets, however, have to source from both streams, so are buying both British meat to sell fresh and Polish imports for their convenience meals. Producers in Poland have been looking for new export markets since religious slaughter was banned in Poland, meaning that they could not export to Muslim countries.
