Imports of hardware and infrastructure components destined for data centre construction projects are helping to sustain trans-Pacific freight volumes throughout the current peak season, according to industry sources.

The surge in technology-related shipments is providing a welcome boost to carriers and forwarders, with servers, networking equipment, cooling systems and associated infrastructure driving consistent demand on key trade lanes between Asia and North America.

However, this robust performance in the technology sector is masking underlying weakness in traditional consumer merchandise shipments. Retail-bound cargo, historically the backbone of peak season volumes, has shown notable softness as importers navigate cautious consumer spending patterns and elevated inventory levels.

The shift highlights a significant transformation in trans-Pacific trade dynamics, with hyperscale data centre expansion projects across the United States generating sustained demand for specialised freight capacity. Major technology firms continue to invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, driving requirements for high-value, time-sensitive shipments.
