An Australian government official has been in court accused of helping import exotic fish. He was charged in November following an investigation into five illegal imports, involving people from Vietnam and Malaysia during 2017 and 2018.

Department of Agriculture and Water Resources officials had discovered evidence which purportedly linked the senior biosecurity officer to one of the Malaysians.
Investigators raided the officer’s Sydney home last month, allegedly finding several rare fish and more than $10,000 which was suspected to be the proceeds of crime.

He has been charged with three offences, including abusing public office and illegally importing goods.
