During a recent meeting at the Department of Transport, the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport were advised that the UK has successfully negotiated membership of the Common Transit Convention (CTC).
This Convention allows traders to delay the processing of import customs clearance and payment of duties until the exported goods arrive at their destination.
The CTC will ease congestion and delays at the point of entry in the event of a ‘No Withdrawal Agreement’ Brexit.
It is likely that certain specialist regulatory border checks for imports will still be in place, such as sanitary checks on agri-foods, but the CTC may provide the possibility of some simplifications that will be useful for groupage shipments in particular.
