A new report which was presented yesterday to the International Maritime Organisation’s Environment Protection Committee suggested that emissions could be reduced by 30% by slow steaming.  The shipping industry has been reluctant to adopt slow-steaming, as you would need more ships to move the same amount of freight in the same amount of time.  The report shows that the recent economic downturn has caused enough over-capacity to cut shipping emissions in the most import freight segments – tankers, bulk carriers and container ships – by around 30% by slow steaming.
