The largest rail freight zone in France is situated at the port of Dunkirk.  The government in France has recently approved rail freight as a sustainable transport mode, which has encouraged Dunkirk to plan a modal transfer programme.  This involves developing a number of projects which will improve rail infrastructure in and around the port, and enable freight to be transferred to other modes, such as sea and road.
