Politicians in Australia are now admitting that investment is needed in vital freight infrastructure to enable the country’s economy to develop.  Freight traffic is expected to treble over the next 40 years, and a freight network plan and national ports strategy is already under discussion.  In 2008 the government announced a coastal shipping strategy, but it seems that this has been abandoned in favour of road and rail investment.
