Another Scottish freight train was involved in an incident during the run-up to Christmas.  On 22 December a 22 wagon freight train took two miles to stop, narrowly missing a collision with a passenger train at Carstairs in Lanarkshire.  Fortunately a signalman noticed that the freight wagons appeared to be out of control, and took action to divert the passenger train, thus avoiding a major accident.  An inquiry is being carried out into why the freight train failed to stop.
