Engineering work over the Christmas break has been taking place on the Southampton to West Midlands line.  Thousands of shipping containers pass through the port of Southampton, and the railway line is being lowered so that 9ft 6inch high containers can pass through the existing Victorian tunnel.  The Chairman of the Rail Freight Group praised Network Rail for keeping a single track service going throughout the period.  The preparatory work means that the tunnel will not have to close at all next Christmas.
