In common with all other Finnish ports, volume through the port of Helsinki has seen a considerable decline, but because it is not so dependent on the Russia trade, it has suffered less than most. Helsinki is near the main centre of population in Finland, and has good traffic connections; all the large logistics companies have their main activities nearby. The new port of Vuosaari has taken freight traffic away from the congested city centre, and offers opportunities to develop logistics facilities with the benefit of economies of scale due to the large volumes of cargo which can be handled. This means that if some of the country’s ports have to close, Helsinki is likely to be in a winning position.
