It appears that global container volumes will fall for the first time in history, as recently published figures show that the main ports in China handled 11.2% less container traffic in the first five months of this year than in the comparable period last year.  Volumes through Singapore and Hong Kong were also down considerably.  Exports from 

China fell again in June, but at a slower pace than in May, so some industry analysts are predicting that there may still be some marginal growth in volumes this year.
