The owner of the Port of Gothenburg, the biggest port in the Nordic region, is inviting private terminal operators to take over the terminals. This is an unusual innovation for Scandinavia and Finland, where ports have traditionally been owned and operated by the municipality. Some new greenfield sites in the Nordic region have been set up from the beginning to be operated by private terminal operators, but Gothenburg is a well-established port which has been operated by the municipality for many years. The current owners wish to develop Gothenburg as a freight hub and ensure that it remains the leading port in the Nordic region.
