The latest statistics issued by the Department for Transport show that 68% of freight in the UK is moved by truck;the average journey made by by truck is 54 miles. This compares with only 8% of goods moved by rail freight and 20% by water. Freight carried by water tends to be heavier and less urgent, and the average journey is 250 miles. According to the CBI, the road infrastructure is so poor that it could hold back business when the economy begins to recover.
