Kenya’s mango farmers are once again able to export to the lucrative European Union market after successful negotiations between Nairobi and Brussels last week. Imports will be allowed from areas that have a low prevalence of fruit flies.
Since 2013 Kenya has instituted a self-imposed ban on the export of mangoes to the EU due to the fruit fly menace.
Kenya wished to avoid having the restriction imposed by the EU itself, as this would make it harder to resume exports once the fly is contained.
