Flower farms in Kenya have been badly affected by the fall in exports caused by Covid-19 precautions.
Seasonal workers were sent home with two weeks’ pay, whilst pensionable employees were sent on their annual one month leave whilst employers monitored the quickly changing situation.
Flights, which usually carry flower exports in the hold of passenger aircraft, have been suspended to some EU importing countries.
The auction which is the main market for Kenya’s flower exports, has collapsed because exports have fallen by 50 per cent.
Some farmers have been forced to compost flowers ready for export due to cancellation of their orders from importers.
