China’s pork imports are declining, because of a trade war with the U.S. and a fall in domestic prices.
A major pork production company shipped more pork from the U.S. to Japan and Korea in the first half of the year, and will continue to change its trade flows if trade tensions remain, Wan Long, chief executive officer of the world’s biggest pork company, said in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
Lower hog prices in China increased consumption of domestic meat, while mimport tariffs on American pork further eroded the competitiveness of imports, the company said in a statement.
