South Africa is planning to launch a lawsuit against the US, saying that proposed import tariffs on South African motor car imports will violate the contry’s rights under the African Growth and Opportunity Act.

SA’s Trade and Industry Minister said that “interested groups” planned to challenge the latest US tactic in the growing global trade war.

He said that South Africa was already suffering “collateral damage”. He was referring specifically to heavy tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, which are mainly directed at large economic competitors such as China and the European Union.
