Crocodiles have been a protected species in Australia for decades; the resulting population explosion is endangering the human population, and the Northern Territory government wishes to profit from this by exporting excess crocs, eggs and skins.
The new Trade Management plan will allow them to increase exports: “This represents a 40 percent increase for eggs and a 100 percent rise for animals over the previous five-year plan limit.”
The eggs taken from the wild would be sent to crocodile farms for incubation before export. Live animals could be used for breeding or the export of skin and other body parts.
