The Norwegian government said that the free trade agreement being negotiated between the EU and US could have serious consequences for Norway’s seafood exports.
At the end of March, the government issued a new report on the consequences of an FTA between the US and the EU; the two regions are Norway’s biggest trading partners.
The consequences for fish exports could be serious, said Norway’s industry minister Karin Maeland. “It’s likely that the competitivity of Norwegian fish exports will be significantly worsened, since Norway does not have duty free access for fishery exports to the EU or the US.”
Norway can not close its eyes to the reality and needs to debate now to make sure it’s as prepared as possible, said Vidar Helgesen, Norway’s minister for the European Economic Area/ EU.
