Freight transport companies and organisations in Denmark, Sweden and Norway are calling on their governments to temporarily opt-out of the EU cabotage rules.
The trucking companies say that unfair competition from lower cost base trucking companies from the Baltic states and Eastern Europe are pricing Nordic truckers out of the market. Wages for Romanian and Bulgarian drivers are only about 10% of those in Denmark and Sweden, so freight transport groups want Nordic governments to back a change whereby trucks registered in the Baltics or Eastern Europe would be prohibited from making more than one delivery or collection a week in Scandinavia.
