Three new freight terminals will be developed in northern Italy,as part of Europe’s plans to improve the rail infrastructure for cargo. The Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is due to open in 2017, will help to improve transit on the Rotterdam-Genoa rail freight corridor, but this will require additional work on the railways in neighbouring countries.

Terminals are planned for  Milan, Brescia and Piacenza.
