An agreement has been signed to begin the development of an intermodal logistics and  freight terminal in the Sydney area. Over the past five years, the Government says that Port Botany has had around 7% annual growth in freight volumes. A further 6.7% per year increase is expected over the next 25 years.

The new facility should be able to handle the estimated 1 million  shipping containers per annum. It is hoped that it will take 1.2 million trucks off Sydney roads annually by transferring container freight to rail. The terminal complex will include a port shuttle opening in 2017.
