The Swiss Transport Ministry reports that there has been an increase in both road and rail freight being carried through the Swiss Alps in the first six months of 2011.  Rail freight continues to increase its share, carrying 64.1% of the total compared with 62.6% in the same period last year. The haulage total increased significantly on  last year, reaching similar levels to 2007 and 2008.

The government should complete its report on long-term developments and proposals on future policy by the end of the year.
