Shrimp imports from all but one of the top seven US suppliers rose in February 2016, with a total shrimp import increase of 17.5% year-on-year, according to latest figures.
The reason seems to be lower prices, with the average price per kilogram at $8.89, compared to $10.13/kg for February of 2015.
Imports from Indonesia, India, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Mexico – six of the top seven shrimp exporters to the USA – all increased. Ecuador was the only top-seven supplier country whose numbers dropped, with a dip of 11.1% from 7,626 metric tons to 6,781t y-o-y, dropping it from the second-largest importer to the third-largest.
