The Ministry of Agriculture in Hungary announced on Wednesday that it had secured HUF 6 billion (EUR 15.9 million) in compensation from Brussels for domestic maize producers due to Ukrainian grain imports.
A total of HUF 5.9 billion (EUR 15.6 million) until the end of 2023, to mitigate the losses Hungarian farmers suffered as a result of the severe disruption of the grain market caused by the war and the sanctions policy which resulted in cheap imports of grain from Ukraine.
Besides maintaining the import ban, Hungary considered it important to compensate farmers who had suffered damage.
