A Belgian ship agent has been held liable for releasing six containers of castor oil against a forged bill of lading. The shipper claimed that it had not been paid for the cargo, and was still holding the original bills. It was established that the ship agent should have spotted the forgery.  Shipping documents are easier to forge than ever, and intermediaries need to check carefully.
