Voies Navigables de France is lobbying for support in Europe to rehabilitate the Rhine – Rhone canal as a freight channel between Switzerland and France.  Part of the canal is currently only navigable by pleasure craft, although in Roman times freight was shipped from Marseilles up the Rhone, Saone and Doubs for onward transport to Switzerland.  The cost of renovating the canal is likely to be very high, and there will be strong objections by environmentalists.
