European regional specialties will be especially affected by planned import tariffs to the USA. Goods which have “protected name status”, such as Scotch whisky and Parmesan cheese, need a specific production method and geographical provenance to be sold under that name. These products fetch higher prices; if USA import tariffs increases their price, this will give a boost to copycat products in America.
European exporters feel that they are being unfairly targeted in a political argument. US retailers and importers of European speciality products will also suffer.
Products which are more valuable to the US economy, such as machinery, have mainly been excluded.
