Exports of agricultural, fishery and forestry products and related processed foods from Japan will probably achieve a government-set target of ¥1 trillion in 2019.

Japanese “washoku” cuisine is experiencing a boom overseas.

“Since there remains much room for a further increase in exports of Japanese agricultural, fishery and forestry products, we should promptly improve related environments,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a panel of relevant Cabinet ministers in late April.

The panel’s task is to increase exports of food products from Japan through cross-ministry cooperation.

The government in Japan is promoting exports of foodstuffs because of a sense of crisis. The government thinks that Japan’s agricultural, fishery and forestry industries will fall into decline if they continue to rely on the domestic market, because the population is shrinking.
