A recent report suggests that freight between different states in India could more efficiently be transited through Bangladesh, where the use of rail corridors is likely to be more cost-effective.  It is expected that Bangladesh would earn a total net profit of $23 bn from cargo handling in 30 years.  The study which produced the report was made up of a team of experts from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan.  It is estimated that about 12.2 million tonnes of freight would be diverted from Assam and 2.32 million tons from Nagaland.

The study also found that 1.75 million tonnes of international freight traffic would be diverted through Bangladesh.
