The production of onions in Turkey reduced over the past two seasons. Usually import tariffs for onions are 49%. the Turkish ministry of trade announced that import tariffs for onions are set to zero until February 28. This is an attempt to stabilize the prices.

Most countries produce onions only for their own needs, and it is therefore difficult to find an exporter.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Iran may be willing to export onions to Turkey.

For a long time onions in Turkey cost at least 0,83 Euro per kilo and have now increased to 2 Euro per kilo. Due to poor storage practices, domestic stocks are rotting. If Turkey cannot find suitable exports, a shortage of onions might last until April.
