Trinity House, responsible for most of the lighthouses in the UK and for charging light dues to maintain them, has published a report answering criticisms of the increase from shipping lines and freight industry pundits. The main opposition has come from deep sea container shipping lines, who generate 48% of total light dues, but only account for 23% of calls at the ports.  Their argument has been that the increase in dues will force them to switch ships from UK ports to Rotterdam, but the report suggests that this would cost the shipping lines an additional £345 per container, including sea freight from Rotterdam to the UK.  This would be far greater than the increase in light dues, which have not changed since 2005, when they were actually reduced.
