A major Chinese terminal operator is planning to increase its use of electric-powered container handling, with the aim of obtaining ISO 14000 environmental accreditation at all its main terminals.  Currently most freight containers are handled by diesel-powered machinery, with consequent high emissions.  As the shipping industry becomes more aware of the need to reduce emissions and save fossil fuels, electric handling equipment offers the opportunity to reduce energy consumption by 30%.  The company is carrying out a pilot project at Shekou terminal in Shenzhen; if successful if will be rolled out in their facilities at Tianjin, Qingdao, Ningbo, Xiamen and Zhangjiang.
