The FEFC (Far Eastern Freight Conference) imposed a surcharge of 150 US Dollars per 20 foot container on freight container services from Northern Chinese ports with effect from April 1st. Some Individual shipping lines have also imposed a heavyweight container surcharge. This action by shipping lines to discourage heavy cargoes has been made to ensure that essels do not reach their permitted weight limit before all available container stowage space has been utilised.
