In 2016, the Netherlands imported a record €433m of avocados. This makes it the largest importer of avocados in the world after the US, according to the national statistics office.
Avocados are now the second biggest fruit import in the Netherlands, after grapes and ahead of bananas.
However, around 79 per cent of avocado imports, mainly from Peru, Chile and South Africa, are in fact re-exported, predominantly within Europe, to countries including Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
Nevertheless, consumption is also rising fast among Dutch shoppers. Around 39m kilograms of avocados were purchased by Dutch consumers in 2016, up from just 10m kilograms in 2008.
