KiwiRail is putting on extra rail freight services to Christchurch so that additional food supplies can be delivered to supermarkets. Christchurch – the second city of New Zealand which was hit by a violent earthquake at the weekend – has only limited warehouse space, so frequent deliveries of freight are required to keep up supermarket stocks. The rail company is juggling logistics by off-loading freight from trains at Rangiora and taking it to Christchurch by road, as the line was damaged in the earthquake.
