Recently published research shows that Singapore is still the largest port in the world by volume, in spite of huge growth in the main ports of China. Overall freight volumes fell during 2009 but China’s ports did well in the world wide recession and gained greater prominence in the world. The five largest ports in the world – Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Busan all showed declines in double digits from 2008, including Singapore were the fall in volume was 13.7%.
